Bleed

When any image or element on a page touches the edge of the page, extending beyond the trim edge, leaving no margin it is said to bleed. It may bleed or extend off one or more sides.

When images (or color) are arranged right up to the edge of the paper, a "bleed" is needed. We will actually run the printed piece on an oversized sheet of paper and print the image off the finished edge, trimming off the excess. Though the sharp edge of a cutting blade is razor sharp, there is still some degree of pull during the cut. This minute difference between the sheets in the top and bottom of the cut pile would never be noticed unless an image were slightly touching the edge. So bleed is given to eliminate noticeable difference.

Bleed is when a larger area than the finished size of the document is cropped to ensure that no white edges show on the finished document. We prefer 1/8" extra around the entire document.

Instructions:

Postcards/Fliers/Business Cards/Rack Cards/Bookmarks

Final Trim area: This is the size of the job before it is trimmed down.

Live Area: The final size of the postcard after it is trimmed.

THE BLEED is the 1/8" area around the edge of the piece that could be cut off. This area is necessary to accommodate for press and bindery functions. The bleed is included for the above products within the final dimensions of the files.

We will trim your final trim area up to 1/16" to 1/8" on all sides. Hence, after trimming, the Live Area could be up to 1/4" smaller than the Final Trim Size.

The following guidelines should be followed for any standard products that are printed on 100lb. gloss cover (c2s) and 14pt. cardstock (c2s):

The bleed for the above products is included within the final dimensions of the files. Hence, your document size should be set up as the advertised size. We will then trim your piece between 1/16" to 1/8" on all sides. Hence, after trimming, the Live Area could be up to 1/4" smaller than the Final Trim Size. For example, if you are printing a 4" x 9" rack card, you should set up your document as 4" x 9" and leave all important text or images at least 1/8" away from the edges. We will print your piece to size. However, during bindery we will trim from 1/16" to 1/8" off each side. This means your final piece (also referred to as the Live Area) could be as small as 3.75" x 8.75". Please call us if you have any questions about setting up your document.

*** If you would like your business cards to be trimmed to exact size please specify that in the Special Instructions section of your order form (exact size requests for postcards, rack cards and other products printed on these stocks might incur additional charges.)

The following guidelines should be followed for any standard products that are printed on 100lb. gloss text:

The bleed for any product printed on 100lb. gloss text is included outside the final dimensions of the files. Therefore, you should size your document with an extra 1/8" on all sides (outside the Live Area). After trimming, products printed on 100lb. gloss text will be cut to exact size. For example, if you are printing an 8.5" x 11" sell sheet you should size your files with an extra 1/8" outside of the Live Area. Your files should be set to 8.75" x 11.25" with all important text or images being kept at least 1/8" away from the edges (we recommend that you keep them approximately 1/4" away for the edges). We will print the sell sheet as 8.75" x 11.25" and then trim 1/8" on all sides. This will leave you with a sell sheet in which the final size (Live Area) is 8.5" x 11". Please call if you have any questions about setting up your document.

Note: The requirements listed in this catalog or on our website are to be used as general guidelines. There may be special requirements or circumstances that apply to your job. We will be happy to answer any questions that you might have in setting up your digital files. Failure to meet our guidelines will result in delayed processing of your files and may incur additional charges. We will not be responsible for failure to comply with our guidelines which result in delays or errors on press. Ê
